Side Event Description: CURRENT SITUATION
In the digital age, children and adolescents are the most active digital citizens but also the most vulnerable group. They face many risks in cyberspace such as online seduction, manipulation, dissemination of harmful images and content, invasion of privacy or “online kidnapping”. These behaviors not only cause psychological and social damage but also leave long-term consequences for the development of the younger generation.
In this context, online platforms play a pivotal role: both as a space for children to learn, create and connect, and as a first line of defense to protect children and young people from cybercrime. Platforms prioritizing child and young person protection, proactively deploying protection tools, removing infringing content, making governance processes transparent and working closely with regulators are key to ensuring a safe and healthy online environment. With the participation of speakers from leading organizations, this roundtable provided an opportunity to discuss the role of online platforms in protecting children and young people, share practical experiences and propose collaborative measures to build a safer online space.
